Last week I wrote about my three must-have perennials for every garden, including my own. As a landscape designer, I strongly believe that the most visually successful gardens balance the use of perennials with shrubs and grasses. Too often I see beds filled to the brim with show-stopping bloomers without any visual breaks. To me, this is like going to the orchestra and every musician is playing his or her own symphony as loud as possible — all at the same time.
